Itinerary Details

Day 1: Vancouver, Canada

It's hard to imagine that a character named "Gassy Jack" Deighton could be linked to one of the continent's most stunning cities. But that’s how history unfolds.

During the gold rush era, Gassy Jack seized the opportunity to profit from the miners heading to the Yukon. The saloon he built became the heart of the makeshift town known as Gastown. From this humble beginning of shacks, modern Vancouver emerged. The provincial government later persuaded settlers to rename the town Vancouver, honouring Captain George Vancouver who explored the area in 1792.

As Canada’s third-largest city, Vancouver offers a cosmopolitan vibe with a touch of European charm. It boasts a diverse ethnic mix—including North America’s second-largest Chinatown—and is renowned for its breathtaking parks.

Day 2: At Sea

Day 3: Ketchikan, Alaska, USA

Known as Alaska's "First City," Ketchikan is the first major community travelers encounter as they head north. Situated on an island, Ketchikan began as a Native fishing camp. The name Ketchikan originates from a Tlingit phrase meaning "eagle with spread-out wings," referencing a local waterfall.

In the early 1900s, the gold rush prompted the establishment of fishing and timber industries in Ketchikan. These industries helped the town grow into Alaska's fourth-largest city.

Visitors to Ketchikan can explore its rich Native heritage, including the world’s oldest collection of totem poles at the Totem Heritage Center. The city’s history includes the Haida, Tlingit, and Tsimshian tribes. Ketchikan is also a haven for sportfishing enthusiasts and offers stunning views of Misty Fjords National Monument.

Day 4: Juneau, Alaska, USA

In 1880, Joe Juneau and Richard Harris faced numerous hardships while searching for gold with the aid of Native guides. Their perseverance paid off when they discovered nuggets "as large as beans."

This discovery led to the creation of three of the world’s largest gold mines. By the end of World War II, over $150 million worth of gold had been mined. Though the mines eventually closed, the town founded by Juneau became Alaska’s capital, shifting from gold mining to government.

With around 30,000 residents, Juneau is one of the largest cities by area, surpassed only by Kiruna, Sweden, and Sitka, Alaska. Today, it’s celebrated not just for its gold and governmental significance but also for its spectacular glaciers and scenic vistas of water and mountains.

Day 5: Skagway, Alaska, USA

Skagway served as the gateway to the Klondike gold fields for thousands of hopeful prospectors. Although it offered the shortest route to the gold fields, it was also the most challenging.

Over a century ago, prospectors used the White Pass route through the Coast Mountains and the steeper Chilkoot Trail. Many did not survive the treacherous Chilkoot Trail.

The gold rush turned Skagway into Alaska’s largest town by 1898, with a population of about 20,000 and bustling hotels, saloons, dance halls, and gambling houses. However, as gold yields dwindled in 1900, the population declined as miners moved on to new discoveries in Nome.

Today, Skagway has fewer than 1,000 residents but retains its gold rush-era charm.

Day 6: Scenic Cruising Glacier Bay National Park

Day 7: Scenic Cruising College Fjord

Day 8: Whittier (Anchorage), Alaska, USA

Located about 65 miles southeast of Anchorage, Whittier is nestled at the base of the Chugach Mountains along Passage Canal. Originally established as a World War II port for cargo and troops, Whittier remained a military port until 1960. Today, the town of 290 residents primarily relies on fishing, the port, and increasingly, tourism.

Once accessible only by boat or a wartime railway tunnel, the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel has been upgraded to accommodate highway traffic, making it the longest highway/rail tunnel in North America at 2.5 miles.

Named after poet John Greenleaf Whittier, the town is the gateway to Prince William Sound, renowned for its impressive tidewater glaciers and rich marine life.

Tours of Whittier are available for passengers on back-to-back voyages who will stay onboard for the return to Vancouver, as well as for guests ending their cruise in Whittier with an evening flight from Anchorage on the disembarkation day or an overnight stay in Anchorage. Whittier tours are reserved for cruisetour guests who spend the first night of their package in Anchorage, as other guests would miss transfers to their next destination.
