Itinerary

Day 1: Christchurch City – Kaikoura (D)

The rental company will pick you up at the airport to collect your car and sign the rental contract.

Drive north on SH1. The Waipara Valley is the fastest growing wine region in New Zealand with around 80 vineyards; it is worth stopping for a wine tasting session if you have time.

Few places in the world can boast of such natural wonders as those offered by land and sea in Kaikoura... The mountains are very close to the sea and covered by snow 10 months per year.

 KAIKOURA HIGHLIGHTS:

  • SEALS - You can watch some at the end of the peninsula, or at the Ohau Point water falls. Please stay behind the fences.
  • ORNITHOLOGY - If you are fond of birds, this is a good place to watch them, especially Albatrosses.
  • FISHING - Many local fishermen are keen to take you out in the water. Their phone number is usually written on their boat.
  • WALKS - If you enjoy walking, the I-Site has a selection of maps and suggestions, the Kaikoura area offers walks for all tastes and levels of fitness, ranging from a length of thirty minutes to half and full day tracks and more energetic tramps and climbs. It is worth driving up to Mt Fyffe for a breath-taking view of the peninsula. At the edge of the peninsula you can watch seals and have a walk on the coastal track.

Hapuku Lodge, Kaikoura

Hapuku Lodge & Tree Houses is a contemporary country hotel located on a deer breeding farm in the South Island of New Zealand, 12 kilometres North of the renowned eco-marine town of Kaikoura. It sits snugly at the base of the Kaikoura Seaward Mountain Range, with the Kaikoura coast and famed Mangamaunu Bay only a kilometre to the east. The Lodge provides luxurious accommodation on Kaikoura’s rugged coastline, a place for guests to relax in its intimate indoor/outdoor setting and a place from which they can explore the larger maritime landscape of Kaikoura.

All lodge rooms are suites which offer large soaking tubs, king beds and balconies that look over the farm’s deer grazing in paddocks adjacent to the Kaikoura mountains. The light filled Hapuku Room is beautifully furnished with fireplace, writing desk and private entrance.

While there are many things to do in the wider Kaikoura district, at the Lodge and within its environs there is plenty to do if a guest is so inclined. Try one’s skill at country and mountain biking with the Lodge's mountain bikes (and helmets). A variety of walks can be taken from the Lodge, from short to long, beach to bush, with a picnic basket if desired, including a botanical tour of the local native bush. An ocean fishing trip can be arranged, which can include the opportunity to catch a crayfish.

From the Lodge: (Some activities may be subject to additional cost)

Explore the local Hapuku trails on a Mountain bike
Help pick olives (May-June)
Watch the harvesting of antlers from the farm’s stags
Learn to surf at famed Mangamaunu surf break
Swim in the ocean or sit by the Pool/Sauna
Have a massage
Take a picnic excursion
Or just sit by the fire with a glass of wine

Dining and the dining room at the Lodge, with its relaxed and warm atmosphere, is at the heart of the Hapuku Lodge experience. The area in which the Lodge is located, was designated on the first European maps of the district as “Kai Whare”, the Maori term for “house of food”. Here you can watch the food being prepared and chat with our chefs as they prepare your meal. You will realize during your stay that we have a passion for food - for the producing of it, for the preparation and cooking of it and for presenting it. Our Chef manages all matters relating to the food we serve, from the Lodge’s gardens, in which we grow a good deal of the vegetables and herbs used in the kitchen, our free range chickens, the gathering of provisions from local gardeners and producers, sourcing the best meat and fish either directly from the farm or fisherman, the running of the kitchen, the creation of the daily menu and the service. Which is why our guests are prone to say that we have some of the best food in the country. Eating with us will, we believe, enhance and deepen your appreciation of what New Zealand has to offer.
