The world-famous 'Garden City', Christchurch's well-established expansive parks and public gardens owe much to the planning and foresight of the city's founding fathers. The central city area and some eastern suburbs were heavily affected by the earthquake of February 2011. The rebuild of the CBD has brought with it a new vibrancy to the ever-changing city.

Along this journey you’ll see epic vistas, travel the edges of the ice fed Waimakariri River, traverse the Southern Alps, and see miles of native beech forest. The TranzAlpine is one of the world's great train journeys covering 223 kilometres (139 miles) one-way, taking just under 5 hours. You’ll traverse the majestic Canterbury Plains, to the backdrop of the mighty Southern Alps - the journey of a lifetime.

The rental company will pick you up at the train station. You will pick your car up and sign the contract.

Day 3: Punakaiki – Nelson City (B)

Drive north on SH6 to Westport where you will follow the signs to Nelson.

- CHARLESTON is 25 minutes’ drive south of Westport, on the Coast Road. The site of a major gold rush in the 1860s, Charleston is now famous for its extensive limestone caves and caving experiences, the Nile River, and the beachfront area around Constance Bay.

- WESTPORT - A port town near the mouth of the Buller River, is the largest town inthe Northern West Coast. It offers a range of retail, banking and other services that you would expect in a large centre, including an airport. The mild climate makes the area an ideal outdoor destination for travellers of all ages. Here you can enjoy caving, rafting, jet skiing, jet boating, horse trekking, underworld rafting, surfing, walks, and many other outdoor pursuits. The area also offers some of the region’s finest heritage experiences, and a variety of quality restaurants, cafes and accommodation.

- CAPE FOULWIND/TAURANGA BAY - Is a 20 minutes’ drive to the West, where you will find one of New Zealand’s most accessible fur seal colonies (reached via an excellent walking track). 40 minutes to the North of Westport are the friendly coastal villages of Granity and Hector, with fine arts and crafts studios.

- BULLER GORGE - We recommend a photo stop at Lower Buller Gorge which is on your way.

NELSON - An irresistible blend of lifestyle and stunning landscape, with New Zealand’s highest sunshine hours is well known.  Nelson is New Zealand's second oldest city, settled in 1841 - do not miss South Street with its 16 old cottages. It is a paradise for lovers of coffee and fine art with its numerous galleries and street cafes. Enjoy the year-round sunshine, fine local wines, abundant seafood, and a relaxed holiday atmosphere. Take a walk down a heritage trail, drive out to Richmond for a laidback shopping experience, or perhaps indulge in a glass of the region's finest wines in the vineyards just beyond the centre of Richmond. You can also bring back your own souvenir from the jeweller Jens Hansen Goldsmith, who created the “One Ring” for the Lord of the Rings film trilogy. And the Richmond Harrington’s Brewers makes Prancing Pony beer, once again, inspired by the movies. CENTRE OF NEW ZEALAND - Go to the hill named “The Centre of New Zealand” Some people say (arguably) this is the centre of the country. It is worth taking a look around as the views on Nelson and Abel Tasman are simply great. It is located at the Botanical Reserve, at the end of Hardy Street.
