An epic Hawaiian Airlines itinerary from Amy

18 October 2016

Staff

We recently ran a competition for our agents in conjunction with Hawaiian Airlines to find the very best itinerary using Hawaiian Airlines. This was Amy's entry and one of our runner-ups.

Christmas has come and gone and now it's time for New Year's Eve. Typically here in NZ, it can be a bit of a let down as you see other people around the world having mesmerising & memory lasting New Year Eve's so that's what were going to do this year - we're sending you off to Hawaii

Leaving from Auckland, it's off in style by flying to Honolulu on the 31st December on HA 446 to enjoy Hawaiian Airlines' brand new lie flat business class beds. It's a night flight and with their wave inspired Seatback shell, you're sure to catch lots of shut eye, which is exactly what you'll need to prepare for the next 2 months travel.

Highlights aboard are the Pukana La signature cocktail served prior to take off, and for your awake time, their advanced inflight entertainment system with plenty of programmes to keep you entertained. You will fully celebrate the ending of a wonderful year with some delightful food choices (choose between the Chicken Confit or Pan Fried Salmon), washed down with a wonderful wine selection picked by noted expert on pairing wines, Chuck Furuya.

First though - some down time in Waikiki before welcoming the new year. Accommodation is at the Sheraton Waikiki for its great location and infamous Rum fire bar - just perfect for a relaxed drink on the shores of Waikiki. Spend the day swimming in their gorgeous pool, paddle boarding in the ocean or shopping on the high street - your luggage allowance after all is pretty mighty.

Waking up to New Years Eve and with tickets to the hottest party of the year, you'll see 2017 in with a massive New Years festival to be held at the Aloha Tower Marketplace (traditionally held at the Kakaako Waterfront) that will feature eight stages, live music performances, DJs and an 'Eat the Street food' truck rally - sounds like you'll have a great time!

After the craziness off Waikiki, how could one not see another island! I once met a guy that had grown up in Kauai and claimed it was his favourite island by far - so that's where we'll send you next. It's only a short flight with Hawaiian Airlines and is well known for its incredible natural beauty, gentler pace of life and a strong sense of community and culture. With plenty of 4wd off roading and zip lines plus plenty of relaxation to be enjoyed on miles and miles of uncrowded pristine white beaches - here is the plan of attack:

  • Stay at the wonderful Koa Kea Hotel & Resort on one of the most beautiful stretches of beach in Poipu.
  • Do enjoy a Hawaiian dinner at one of the luau offered to get into the spirit of your Hawaiian holiday.
  • Plan an early morning helicopter tour of the island to get your bearings as most of the island can only be reached by chopper - plus get to see some of the more off-the-beaten places.
  • Hiring a car is a must on this island as public transportation is rare, plus it will give you the freedom you need.
  • An unmissable thing to do is to head out west up to Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park - there are heaps of trails in the area for hiking.
  • A friend also told me to head to to Wailua Beach on the Coconut Coast - this beach, which features Hawaiian historical and cultural sites, is apparently a great place to sit back and watch the world go by.

Shew! That should easily keep you busy for the 5 days on the island...

Next stop - quick flight back to Honolulu and then off to Las Vegas on another red eye flight - thank goodness for those business class seats! Waking up from your flight, stay at the uber cool Cosmopolitan Hotel with great views of the Bellagio Fountains.

After 24 hours of gambling, driving fast cars, ziplining through a Shopping mall and dancing until dawn in the Hakkasan nightclub, get yourself to San Francisco via a tour and avoid the hassle of planning and driving on the wrong side of the road. This great 6 day trip with Intrepid Group will take you away from the bright lights of Vegas through to San Fran via national parks and deserts. Look forward to heading across the country through scorching Death Valley and the forests of Sierra Nevada, exploring Yosemite, marvelling at the size of Half Dome, and then heading towards the coast via the constantly changing scenery.

After a few nights in San Francisco, it's back onto a plane direct to Maui thanks to daily flights with Hawaiian Airlines. For this flight, opt to pay NZD$110 to upgrade to Extra Comfort seats that included extra leg room, priority boarding, free movies and an upgraded meal selection. What a bargain!!

In Maui, great lovers of sealife will adore the foundation called the Pacific Whale Foundation, which has been working for over 30 years to save whales, dolphins, turtles and the coral reefs in Hawaii. Why not combine your beach holiday with giving something back to Maui?

And then for the piece de resistance - a 24 night Oceania Cruise from Honolulu back to Auckland. Departing 28 January and visiting some awe inspiring destinations, this will really be the cherry on the top with shore excursions in Tahiti, New Caledonia, Samoa and Fiji.
