Polar Bears - Churchill, Manitoba - Canada; Part 2

Travellers

Continued from part 1....

Not only does Churchill have the Polar bears, but in the summer around 3000 Beluga whales return here to give birth up river. From the Russian word beilo, meaning "white," the Beluga whales of western Hudson Bay number close to 50,000. During this time you can get up close and personal with them, and it is the only place in the world where you can swim with these fascinating creatures.

There are many ways to see them, from adventurous Kayaks to boat tours. By the end of July, they take their new calves and head north before the ice starts forming, feeding up on capelin, arctic cod and char head prior to their long journey.

Dog sledding tours are another adventure that you could participate in while you’re here, but I may leave that story for another time. There are so many amazing things that you can do and see in this cool little town, where I have spent the last two years living. I’ve come back for two months, but am getting itchy feet to get back to the place I call my home.

So do call into McIntosh Travel, or your local store, and talk to them about how to organise a “once in a lifetime” trip to view these amazing creatures and meet the jovial and friendly locals. Who knows, maybe like me you won't want to come home.
