Located on the island of Borneo, Sabah is a state of Malaysia and home to some great adventures.
Take an overnight trip from Kota Kinabalu to visit Turtle Island and the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary.
Turtle Island is a small conservation island where endangered Green Backed Turtles are born and released in the wild. It was amazing to see the process which allows thousands of these little baby turtles (kind of like little wind up toys) to have a chance of increasing the population – although sad to note that only 2-3% of those will actually live more than 2 years. Our overnight stay here was in basic but clean accommodation and waiting for "Turtle Time" (around 10-11pm) was great fun.
Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary is once again a conservation sanctuary where endangered Orangutans have be saved from captivity or death by poachers and released back into their natural habitat. What an amazing experience being in some cases no more than one metre away from these huge incredible primates. It was even more special by the fact that you weren’t in a zoo or enclosure – this was the wilds of Borneo and the natural forest.
Sabah offers great experiences for all ages and is relatively unspoiled by the tourist trade – a great option if you are looking for something a little different and extremely affordable.
