Self Drive South Australia

16 March 2011

From the southern most coast of Australia all the way to the Outback, South Australia offers a brilliant blend of diverse regions rich in history, culture, scenery, wine and food! So what are you waiting for? Now is the perfect time to hire a car and set off on your own South Australian getaway!

Getting around South Australia is easy, the roads are open and the drives are spectacular. If you’re looking for an adventure in the Outback, just 4 hours drive north of Adelaide and you’re in the spectacular gorges of the Flinders Ranges and Wilpena Pound – a fantastic self drive holiday!  If wine and food is more your style, then follow one of the many regional food trails through the Barossa, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra wine regions. You may be surprised to learn that you can meet many of the expert winemakers in person, at wineries and cellar doors throughout South Australia. With more than 50 cellar doors in the Barossa alone as well as hundreds of local food and artisan producers, The Barossa Butcher, Baker, Winemaker Trail is a great self drive option that will ensure you don’t miss the well known wineries of Jacob’s Creek, Wolf Blass and Peter Lehmann, as well as the smaller, boutique cellar doors throughout the region. You’ll also pass through some of the Barossa’s most spectacular scenery and must see and do experiences!

With thousands of kilometres of coastline, South Australia makes for a great beach holiday escape. With several family friendly beaches located within 20 minutes of Adelaide’s CBD (and most of them crowd free), there are ample opportunities to try your hand at surfing, swimming with dolphins and of course, relaxing in the sun! If you prefer a little more action, follow the Shipwreck Trail down the Fleurieu Peninsula coastline, view the Southern Right Whale between May and June from Victor Harbor, spot seals, and chameleon-like cuttlefish and camp next to the coast to enjoy ocean views and refreshing sea breezes - All within a 90 minute drive from Adelaide.
