Wookey Hole is located on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills near Wells in Somerset, England. To tour through this cavernous tunnel within the hill - all formed by a process called weathering where the natural acid in groundwater dissolves the rocks - is an amazing adventure!
The caves, similar to Cheddar Caves, are at a low, constant temperature and therefore can be used for maturing Cheddar cheese. Different coloured lighting illuminates the caves and waterways underground creating a fantasy wonderland and as you follow the tour, you discover caverns of different shapes and sizes, stalagmite and stalactites, ladders and platforms all built and placed perfectly for that photo opportunity (although there is no flash photography to be used). and if you look carefully, you may even discover a roughly human shaped stalagmite that legend says is a witch turned to stone by a monk.
Claustrophobic as I am, this adventure was worth every second and the slight discomfort I felt upon entering the caves soon dispersed with the wonder and amazement within those walls.
