Southland

Landscapes that will capture your heart and soul

Setting foot in Southland is like stepping into a movie. It's a magical part of New Zealand that if you haven't visited before will make you realise just what draws so many travellers to our little corner of the globe. From the majesty of Milford Sound to the tranquility of Stewart Island and the harsh ruggedness of the Catlins coastline, this is a region of spectacular natural beauty and bucket list experiences.

We suggest taking a road trip along the Southern Scenic Route to discover wild coastal scenery and quirky local sights. Try not to get blown away at the South Island's southernmost tip of Slope Point, walk to waterfalls straight out of a fairytale, and gaze upon prehistoric fossilised trees at Curio Bay. Sample world-famous Bluff oysters before taking the ferry across to Stewart Island, where you may be lucky enough to spot a kiwi in the wild. Lovers of automobiles will have a field day in Invercargill, home to Bill Richardson Transport World and the annual Burt Munro challenge that attracts motorcycle enthusiasts from all around the country.

There's also the iconic Milford Sound, which every New Zealander should tick off their bucket list at some stage. Explore it from the water by ferry or kayak, or challenge yourself on the multi-day Milford Track, lauded as "the finest walk in the world."

Experience the extraordinary landscapes and sights of Southland for yourself and talk to an expert travel consultant about tailoring an itinerary to suit your time frame, interests and budget.

Things you should know about Southland

If you visit Curio Bay along the Catlins coast at low tide, you can see the remnants of a petrified prehistoric forest dating back 180 million years.

Stewart Island is home to over 280km of walking tracks, including the three-day Rakiura Track, one of New Zealand's Great Walks.

There are a total of fourteen fiords in Fiordland National Park, which makes up the southwestern corner of the Southland region.

Tips and advice from our travel advisors

Stewart Island should be added to every traveller's bucket list. It is visually stunning. It is a surprising mix of white sand beaches, tiny forested islands home to a mass of native birdlife and the friendliest locals around.
