Rovos Rail - Slow Luxury

Discover Africa 3 train

Often described as one of the most luxurious trains in the world, Rovos Rail has been redefining slow travel since 1989. Its itineraries range from short two-day escapes to immersive 15-day expeditions, each designed to showcase Africa at a pace that feels both indulgent and deeply intentional.

When Viva Expeditions and South African Tourism invited me to experience Rovos Rail personally, I jumped at the opportunity!

We were lucky enough to travel on one of its most iconic journeys, the three-night, 1,600-kilometre journey across South Africa — a route that beautifully captures why the country is so often called “a world in one.”

The landscape shifts constantly: from the golden grasslands of the Highveld to the stark, almost otherworldly expanse of the Great Karoo, then on to rugged mountain ranges and the lush Cape winelands.

The journey ends in Cape Town, where Table Mountain rises dramatically alongside Devil’s Peak and Lion’s Head — a fitting finale.

What sets Rovos Rail apart isn’t just the scenery, but the sense of occasion woven into every detail. Founded by Rowan Vos, the experience remains family-owned and deeply personal. In a rare and thoughtful touch, Rowan himself is often present at departures, reading each guest’s name aloud as they board. It’s a small gesture, but one that sets the tone for everything that follows.

From the moment you arrive, the experience feels seamless. Check-in is accompanied by drinks and canapés, and once onboard, your name is displayed outside your private suite. Attendants take the time to walk you through every detail, while chefs personally check in to ensure your dining preferences are just right.

Life on the train quickly settles into an easy rhythm. Mornings begin with a leisurely breakfast, followed by a relaxed lunch in the dining car. Afternoon tea offers a moment to pause, and evenings are reserved for a formal dinner — an elegant affair where service begins only once every guest is seated, a charming nod to tradition.

Everything is included, from meals to drinks, and the level of attentiveness from the staff is consistently exceptional without ever feeling intrusive.

Of course, this is still real rail travel — and that’s part of its charm. The gentle (and sometimes not-so-gentle) sway of the train, the steady rhythm of the tracks, and the occasional early start all remind you that this is a journey in the truest sense. Beyond the polished interiors, glimpses of everyday life in nearby communities offer moments of reflection, adding depth and contrast to the experience.

Onboard, the atmosphere is relaxed yet refined. Travellers range from solo adventurers to couples and small groups, with dining arrangements that cater to both intimacy and social connection. The lounge and observation cars quickly become favourite spaces — perfect for a quiet drink, a conversation with fellow passengers, or simply watching the ever-changing African landscape unfold through wide, panoramic windows.

Days are effortlessly stylish with a smart-casual feel, while evenings invite a touch of glamour. On longer journeys, themed nights add a playful element for those who enjoy dressing up.

In the end, Rovos Rail isn’t just about getting from one destination to another. It’s about slowing down, embracing the journey, and experiencing a country through its textures, contrasts, and stories — one mile at a time.

Thank you to South African Tourism and Viva Expeditions for a trip of a lifetime!
