The Southern Civil Rights Story Self Drive Itinerary

Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia make up a rich slice of the American South, where music, history and landscape overlap. Tennessee draws visitors with Nashville’s country music scene and Memphis’s Beale Street, while Arkansas offers a quieter appeal and the Little Rock Central High School Historic Site. Mississippi is the birthplace of the Delta Blues, and Alabama pairs civil rights landmarks in Selma, Montgomery and Birmingham with the white-sand beaches of Gulf Shores. Georgia rounds out the region with cosmopolitan Atlanta and the historic squares of Savannah, making the five states well suited to a self-drive trip full of live music, Southern food and powerful history.
