Explore the City of Sails
Auckland is the glittering jewel in the North Island's crown. Spanning two natural harbours, Manukau Harbour and the Waitematā, it's little surprise that the best way to explore this region of New Zealand is by getting out on the water. Sailboats, ferries and kite surfers are a common sight and in summer the beaches of the North Shore and eastern bays come alive with visitors soaking up the sunshine. On the west coast, the rugged black sand beaches of Piha, Muriwai and Karekare offer a totally different atmosphere and stunning coastal walks.
There's always something happening in the City of Sails. The bars and restaurants in the Wynyard Quarter and Viaduct come alive on the weekends and evenings, Dominion Road's dumpling joints throng with enthusiastic foodies, and the BYOs, bars and music venues along the infamous K Rd attract those with a taste for nightlife. For a typical Auckland experience head for brunch in Morningside, walk up Mt Eden for a panoramic view of the city surrounds, make a day trip to Piha or take the ferry to Waiheke Island, cycle or walk the pink Lightpath and go for a spot of shopping in Newmarket.
There's plenty to see and do in the city and its inner suburbs, but locals will always tell you the best part of living in Auckland is how easy it is to get out of. Stunning landscapes, amazing day walks, beaches and wildlife are only a ferry ride or a half hour drive out of the CBD.
