West Coast

Uncover this region of wild natural beauty

The South Island's wild west coast is a region of stunning natural beauty, and it's not just Kiwis who think so. Haast was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Great Coast Road has been declared one of the best coastal drives in the world. This a region you definitely visit for its nature - ancient glaciers, limestone cliffs, blowholes, sea caves, rivers, beaches, hot springs and natural arches.

You can start at the southern part of the coast after exploring the Southland region and head north on a road trip towards Kahurangi National Park, continuing on to explore Nelson and the Abel Tasman if you have some extra time on your hands. Or flip it around and travel north to south in a rental car, stopping off along the way to hit up a walking or mountain biking trail if that's your thing. Keep an eye out for fur seals and other unique wildlife that inhabit this special region, immerse yourself in nature on the Heaphy or Papamoa Great Walks, or view things from above on a helicopter ride.
