Last year, my wife Carolyn and I embarked on an unforgettable journey through Central Asia, spending four weeks exploring the captivating landscapes, rich histories, and vibrant cultures of the ‘Stans' — Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and a charming, rustic homestay in the hills of Tajikistan, where we got to experience the practical, self-sufficient lifestyle of rural Tajik communities, including their warm hospitality, traditional cooking, and close ties to the natural environment.

Each country offered something unique, from the breathtaking alpine scenery of Kyrgyzstan to the ancient Silk Road cities of Uzbekistan, where we wandered through timeworn bazaars and marvelled at intricate Islamic architecture.

After weeks of adventure and discovery, we slowed the pace with a serene escape to Folegandros (my new 'happy place'!), a tiny, lesser-known gem among the Greek Islands.

With its whitewashed houses, dramatic cliffs, and tranquil beaches, Folegandros was the perfect place to unwind, reflect on our journey, and soak in the simplicity and beauty of island life.

It was a trip of contrasts and deep connection — with each other, and with the incredible places we visited.
