It’s been a great 3 days. Big morning the other day, we got the bus from Vancouver Station to the ferry terminal 45 mins away, then a 1 ½ hour ferry ride across to Vancouver Island, an another 45 mins down to Victoria, our home for the next 2 nights.
.
Victoria is lovely, it’s situated around a harbour with quite a European feel – old buildings & hotels reflect that plus there are horse & carriage rides going round the streets! We enjoyed afternoon tea (more like lunch!) at the gorgeous Fairmont Empress Hotel, located in the prime position overlooking the harbour & minutes walk from the main street. In the historic tea lobby we were served endless cups of tea in fancy china cups and there were numerous fancy sandwiches, scones & sweets. This is one of the must-do’s in Victoria. In Summer they serve up to 1000 people a day!
.
We took a bus to Butchart Gardens which is about 30-40 mins north of Victoria. There were themed gardens, like the sunken garden (my favourite), or the Italian or Japanese gardens.
.
Thousands of tulips in different colours & combinations were an amazing site to see, absolutely beautiful. We were lucky that they were still out, as they should have finished a month and a half ago.
.
In Sooke, ½ hour from Victoria, most of us tried our hand at ‘ziplining’ (imagine huge flying foxes!). There was 8 lines that soar above the trees ranging from 150 feet to 1000 feet and you can go up to 60 km/hr. It was very fun-if you are ok with heights!
.
Had a short visit to the Royal BC Museum in Victoria. I’m not usually interested in museums but I was impressed. It was quite interactive with lots of visual displays including life size (and real looking!) animals like mammoth, deer, seals that are known to the region.
.
We took an awesome floatplane ride back to Vancouver – only 35 minutes compared to our all morning venture to get there! I’m sitting in business class now ready for the 14 hour Vancouver- Auckland flight home after I was the lucky one drawn out from our group to get the upgrade. The seats are so spacious and comfy & a total contrast to economy as you’d imagine. I start the flight home very relaxed....
