In mid February, I boarded the Pacific Sun for my first cruise travelling from Brisbane to the Whitsunday Islands, Cairns, and Port Douglas.
Finding your feet on the first few days of a cruise is like finding your perfect cocktail in the bar — there’s a huge selection and it can be difficult to know where to start. Participating in events and trying new things is what it’s all about and you’re probably not going to like everything you try. But once you’ve found what makes you happy, there is no looking back.
The scene was set early on when groovy music started to drift out of the sound system at the back of the ship and excited cruise passengers lined up to consume fruity cocktails while preparing to set sail.
The meals were of a high standard and the portions generous, with few guests at our table getting through the entire five courses. With concerns of spiraling kilos weighing heavily on my mind after a few visits to the dessert area I headed for the top deck for a few laps and then to the gym.
My Recommendation: Try the different 'Cocktail of the day' (from the daliy newspaper) discounted each day! Save room for dessert.
For those who prefer a bit more excitement on their daily schedule, there were plenty of onboard entertainment to keep everyone happy. Guests could choose from trivia, dance lessons, bingo (always popular as there was cash to be won), beer quoits, table tennis and a golf-putting tournament to mention just a few.
My Recommendation: For a good laugh and a chance to have a punt on the horses, get along to the cardboard cut-out races.
Everything was so well organized, from food, to entertainment, to room service to the kids club. I think one needs a holiday to recover after being on the cruise, because there is so much to do, and it's impossible to do everything. I have nothing but utmost praise and respect for everyone who works on the ship. Nothing was too much trouble for any one and everybody was very approachable and friendly.
I would definitely recommend the cruise to everyone, no matter of your age. I met so many wonderful people, the crew were so helpful, and we all felt like royalty because they treated us so well.
Well I found my perfect cruising rhythm (and my perfect cocktail) and it was hard coming back to everyday life.
