Explore the world’s largest island nation

Bali's reputation as a wellness and relaxation destination has been a primary drawcard for Kiwi travellers to this island nation for years, but there is so much more that Indonesia's 17,000+ islands have to offer. Of course, we highly recommend you enjoy a getaway to the rice terraces of Ubud and soak up the sunshine in Seminyak. But make sure you take some time to explore some of the other incredible islands here.

Adventure junkie? Watch the sunrise over the Prambanan and Borobudur temples, hike the ancient volcano Mount Nglanggeran or go caving in Jomblang cave in Yogyakarta on the island of Java. Or you might want to head to Bukittinggi in Sumatra to visit the remarkable Ngarai Sianok Canyon. Wildlife watcher? Search for Javan Rhinos in Ujung Kulon National Park, get up close to rare tiny tarsiers in the Tangkoko Nature Reserve in Bitung, or take a jungle trek in Sumatra, home to the Sumatran Tiger. Add into the mix ancient temples, white sandy beaches, marine parks, hot springs and street food delights, and you’ll find Indonesia to be a place of many wondrous experiences.

Talk to our expert travel consultants about planning a trip to Indonesia and they’ll tailor a holiday that takes in all the best parts this country has to offer, making sure you’ve got time for all the things you want to see and do.

Things you should know about Indonesia

Indonesia is the meeting point for several tectonic plates: the Eurasian & Australian continental plates and the Philippine Sea & Pacific oceanic plates.

Over 17,500 islands make up the nation of Indonesia. About 7,000 of them are uninhabited.

Bahasa Indonesia is a reformed version of Malay that was introduced in an attempt to foster inclusion and unity among Indonesia’s 300 ethnic groups.

Tips and advice from our travel advisors

For a quirky culinary experience head to Bikini Bar in Seminyak, Bali. I recommend their degustation option where they pair a cocktail to each course. Great music and atmosphere.
